Engineering Intern - Summer 2025

Position Overview

Sefaria, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building the future of Torah in an open and participatory way, seeks an summer engineering intern. This is a full-time, minimum of 8 week internship, with possibility of extension.

This is a hybrid role in Israel with at least one day a week in our Jerusalem office. The internship will run from July 27, 2025 to September 21, 2025, with a possible extension to October 20, 2025. We will be selecting two people for this internship.

This role will focus on enhancing and expanding the linking between Sefaria’s vast library of texts, improving discoverability, and supporting educational exploration. You will work closely with our Product, Design, and Engineering teams to gain in-depth knowledge in data analysis, software development, and digital humanities. This position will report to an Engineering manager.

You will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge digital humanities tools and methodologies, mentorship from industry experts and the opportunity to network in the non-profit tech sector, experience working in an agile, open-source development environment, and a tangible impact on the accessibility and interconnectedness of Jewish texts worldwide.

In this position, you will:

  • Text Linking & Analysis: Assist in developing algorithms and processes to automatically identify and create links between texts in Sefaria’s library.
  • Data Management: Work with large datasets, ensuring accuracy and completeness of text metadata and references.
  • Software Development: Collaborate with the engineering team to implement new features or enhancements in Sefaria’s codebase related to text linking and user experience.
  • Collaboration & Testing: Participate in team discussions, code reviews, and testing of new functionalities.
  • Documentation: Maintain clear and organized documentation of newly developed features, methods, and best practices.

Experience, Qualifications, and Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Basic experience in Python or JavaScript (or similar programming languages).
  • Familiarity with Git/GitHub and version control best practices.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new tools and technologies quickly.
  • Demonstrated interest in digital humanities or text analysis, preferred.

Compensation and Location

  • 64 ILS per hour.
  • This position can be based anywhere in Israel and requires travel at least one day a week to the Jerusalem office.
  • We will be selecting two people for this internship.
